Sri Lanka Tourism marked a significant milestone by hosting the prestigious British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) Media Convention 2025, held from 13th to 23rd May 2025, with the aim of enhancing the country’s destination visibility among top UK travel media and generating high-impact publicity within the UK travel market.

A delegation of 34 accredited professional journalists from the BGTW Association participated in the event, exploring Sri Lanka through three curated thematic experiences: Heritage & Culture, Adventure & Nature, and The Road Less Travelled. The convention was designed to highlight Sri Lanka’s sustainable tourism offerings, authentic experiences, and off-the-beaten-path adventures, while reflecting its inclusive and immersive approach to tourism.

The media group travelled across key regions of the island, including the North & East, Central Highlands, Cultural Triangle, and the Southern and Western coasts. Over ten days, they engaged in a wide range of unique activities — from cave meditation and exploring religious philosophy to wildlife safaris, jungle treks, local cuisine, arts and crafts, and immersive cultural experiences — all showcasing the depth and diversity of Sri Lanka’s tourism landscape.

The tour concluded with a memorable Gala Dinner on 23rd May at Cinnamon Life – City of Dreams, Colombo, bringing together key tourism stakeholders, industry leaders, and media delegates. The distinguished guest list included Mr. Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism; Mr. Dileep Mudadeniya, Chairman of the Tourism Advisory Committee; Mr. M. Shanthikumar, Chairman of THASL; Mr. Chris Coe, Chairman of BGTW; Mr. Hiran Cooray, Chairman of Jetwing Hotels; Mr. Dinesh Perera, Managing Director of Blue Lanka Tours; and Mr. Dushan Wickramasuriya and Ms. Sarangi Thilakasena of SLTPB.

In their closing remarks, members of the British media group expressed deep appreciation for Sri Lanka’s hospitality, noting that the journey reshaped their understanding of the country—from a traditional sun-and-sand destination to a vibrant, diverse, and multi-layered tourism experience. They affirmed their commitment to portraying Sri Lanka’s evolving story in the UK through powerful, engaging features.

Mr. Dushan Wickramasuriya, Director of Marketing, SLTPB, delivered the welcome address at the gala, expressing hope that the group’s storytelling would extend Sri Lanka’s positive image globally. This was followed by a keynote speech from Mr. Buddhika Hewawasam, who emphasized the transformative role of the media in shaping global perceptions and invited the group to be ambassadors of Sri Lanka’s untold stories.

Tokens of appreciation were presented to key partners and contributors. Jetwing Hotels was recognized as the official hospitality partner, and Blue Lanka Tours was commended as the main logistical partner. Special acknowledgements were given to individuals who made outstanding contributions in showcasing niche and experiential tourism offerings, including Dr. Sinharaja Thammita Delgoda, Mr. Miguel Cunat, Ms. Saroja Dharmadasa, Mr. Janaka De Silva, Ms. Shalini Gamage, Mr. Sagara De Silva, Mr. Gamunu Ratnayake, and Mr. Harith Soyza.

In a highlight of the evening, Mr. Chris Coe, Chairman of the BGTW, was ceremonially welcomed in traditional Kandyan attire. In his heartfelt address, he described Sri Lanka as a “stunning island offering exquisite travel experiences,” praising its potential as a top-tier immersive destination. As a gesture of gratitude, he was presented with a commemorative plaque by Mr. Hewawasam.

Ms. Juliet Coombe, Senior Travel Editor of BGTW, delivered the closing remarks, commending Sri Lanka’s tourism potential and thanking the organizers for an exceptional experience. All journalists received tokens of appreciation, followed by the screening of a special video titled “Voices of a Memorable Journey,” which featured reflections and highlights of their travels across the island.

The successful hosting of the BGTW Convention 2025 leaves a lasting impression on some of the UK’s most influential travel writers and is expected to translate into compelling destination features and greater visibility for Sri Lanka in international markets, reinforcing its position as an emerging, authentic, and sustainable destination in Asia.
